Late Sri Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi was born in 1890 and spent his childhood at Bhilsa (MP). In 1911 he took to Journalism under the guidance of Pt. Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi. After working as joint editor of ‘‘Saraswati’’ and ‘‘Abhyudaya’’, 1993 he founded the ‘‘Pratap’’ in Kanpur which he continued to edit till his death.

Vidyarthiji's journalistic campaign in favour of the sad peasantry of Champaran and Rae Bareilly are glorious Chapters of Hindi Journalism. In 1919 he organised the first major textile strike at Kanpur and won the case for labour. He underwent imprisonment several times for his activities against oppression and imperialism.

Vidyarthi was an outstanding orator and his work in founding and managing the Mazdoor Sabha at Kanpur was exemplary. He was a vigilant crusader for village welfare and oppressed people of the state. He was elected M.L.C. by the Kanpur people and presided over the session of all India Hindi Sahitya Sammelan at Gorakhpur.

On March 25, 1931, this great son of India was made a victim of communal hatred and violence, when trying to extinguish the fires of communalism. At the time of his death he was President of the U.P.C.C. His life came to an end in a deplorable manner but his soul continues to be with us and shine as brightly as ever.
